Evaluation Commenting on Distributuon
After researching into the difference between institutions we got together as a group and realised that our final film would have to be distributed by a mainstream institution. We thought about making our piece fit for a niche market, therefore the distributors would be a smaller company like Film4 or MTV. I would have preferred this as most of the inspiration for our film came from films like Napoleon Dynamite and Four Lions.
Overall I decided that our group should go with Columbia pictures simply because they have made films similar to ours before and they have good experiences of working in our style. They also have some great advantages like being connected to Sony which could open our film to all sorts of things especially BluRay.
We learnt that we would have to aim our film at a mass audience; we thought this because most comedies are really popular with a wide demographic as everyone like to see something funny, and comedies are especially popular during times of economic downturn, like now. We did some questionnaires and found that this was correct, a lot of people like to relax and they find that comedy enables them do to this the easiest as its gives them a sense of escapism. I would use a mainstream distributor to distribute my film. For instance this would help me get the film into a big company like Odeon or Cineworld, then my film would be played often, and everyday in a multiplex. This would help me reach my mass audience as a lot of people would want to see the film, and this would let them.
As we have chosen a famous, successful company there are many different ways for our film to be distributed after, before or alongside theatrical release? By having successful and distributors with a lot of money as this can enable our film to be promoted on YouTube or Facebook for example taking over Myspace, like The Dark Knight was able to. This includes across all video stores, especially HMV as they are one of the most successful video stores as they have been around since 1921. This isn’t as accessible as for say Amazon, as people all around the world can get onto this website and have films sent to them for a reasonable price. This opens up our distribution to our mass audience. Also we will distribute using things like iTunes as they don’t have to be sent and videos can be downloaded. Over the last few years downloading has risen in popularity, this will also help us to reach our target audience.
Evaluation Challenging Other Media Products
To start my evaluation I looked at what different things our media piece actually used. Looking at not only our final film but all of the research and planning before. I then went on to compare our final product with similar films of the same genre.
I started by researching into what were some of the most famous comedy films. I tried to include films I had already seen so it was easier for me to reflect. I looked at the different types of characters and found that the research we had done before support the way our main characters were all geeky. By looking at characters in SuperBad, McLovin and Evan (Michael Cera) I saw that they were similar to our characters Tom- who wants to be cool and Stu- who is straight edged and plain. A constant convention of a comedy is laughter. With our opening most of the elements are common actions but some are extremely over exaggerated and odd. For instance when the character Stu looks at his watch, he’s clearly waiting for his friends to be ready. Also when the character Bob is getting ready, there is a shot of him ‘checking himself out’ this is comical as its something that is often in comedies as is seen as funny. Later in the film we would plan to have funny lines, something memorable, like in a lot of comedies out at this moment. For instance Step Brothers has some memorable quotes ‘ can we make our beds into bunk beds so there is more room for activities’ this is already a funny quote but when every learns it and it is used in real life, it promote the film and makes people interested in it. Hopefully are film could do the same.
Titles- looking at other my timeline- the same? Better or worse?
The opening for our film clearly shows that its a comedy. By having bits that actually make the audience laugh is what makes the genre most apparent. By using certain scenes and certain techniques (like the cutting of the sound for Stus shots) it shows that the film isn’t a hundred percent serious and you can tell its meant to be like that. I think our group did well in picking out the right actors as they were able to over exaggerate there actions enough so they still looked real, but you knew they should be funny. I found when filming we helped to make this happen as when filming, it was very relaxed and we were already laughing when filming the shots. This gave us an indication that we would be making a Hybrid comedy genre.

Film Diary
This is a short synopsis of the days we filmed our opening sequence and who filmed on what day. This is helpful as it enables us to create a more detailed Diary on our group blog and will help me when i am writing my evaluation.
Saturday
Our whole group met at Charlotte Morrisons house to film the first actor Paige Lyons, we met at charlottes as we had to film two actors in this location. We all started by filming Paige, some bits without Scott Collins as he was the only male and we wanted Paige to bemost comfertable. After filming all of Paiges shots we waited for next actor Stuart to meet us at Charlottes.
We were then able to film all of Stuarts shots including him coming out of the door. This all went very well and was a lot quicker than Paiges filming. As Staurt is a brother of Bob, another actor of ours he was able to walk us to his house. This was convieniant as we felt less rude by going alone. Also as it wasnt our house only Scott Collins and myself went as we didnt want to over crowed someone elses house.
Monday
We then filmed again on Monday
Myself, Charlotte Morrison and Devon Dalton spent one of our free lessons and lunchtimes to go film paige Lyons coming out of her front door. We had to shcedule this as we had to find a time Paige was free and also when Devon was free as we were using her front door as it was closest to school
Myself and Charlotte also filmed after school this day, as we were using my location we couldn't fit all three of the boys and all four of our group. i think this was annoying for the other people in our group but nothing could realyl be done. we filmed the boys walking down the street and Tom getting ready this day.
Thursday
During the week, we rewatched what we had filmed and started to pick out the shots we were going to use and started to edit. When doing this we realised we would have to refilm Bobs shots as they were overly orange tinted and they didnt match with the rest of the film. Charlotte and Scott went to refilm these shots one day after school as they were the only ones that were able to make it that day.
Saturday
Also during that week we realised that we hadn't filmed our institution lgo even though we had planned it all. This properly took the longest time as we werent 100% sure how we were going to make it work. as only Charlotte and myself filmed that day this was a lot harder and ended up taking about 3 hours instead of 1 or 2 it would have taken if at least one other person was willing to help us.
